Rumor: 80Gig PS3 to come back bigger and better

Ars tecnica has reported that Sony dose intend to phase out the 80gig Playstation 3 unit. But Sony also wishes to keep to its dual SKU strategy. Once the 80gig unit has disappeared from circulation it will be replaced by a SKU with a higher capacity hard dive in the range of 120-160gigs and will come bundled with the new dual shock 3 and retail for the same price as the current 80gig unit.

Sony is, in fact, phasing out the 80GB PS3. Sony is going to stay with the two-SKU approach though, and the prices look to stay the same...
The Spiderman 3 pack-in will disappear as well once the 80GB unit is gone. In order to maintain a similar value proposition to the 80GB/Spiderman 3 bundle, I expect to see a storage increase to 120 or 160GB at the same price point, plus the new Dual-Shock 3 controller

What is Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles - My Life as a King?

MLK, as it will henceforth be called, is, as its core, a simulation game, similar to the Dark Cloud games. Players take control of King Leo, whose job it to rebuilt his kingdom after the destruction of the Miasma through a power granted from a crystal called Architek. Architek grants Leo the power to build Houses, Taverns, Inns, and all sorts of buildings.

Is that all?

Nope. Since King Leo is too young too fight, he must recruit adventurers to fight for him. These adventurers can be one of four classes: Warrior, Thief, Light Mage, and Dark Mage. Leo then sends them out to the world to fight and bring back Elementithe, which is used to power the crystal and Architek.

The buildings that Leo creates affect the power of his warriors, and Leo can choose where to level to send them, where to train, or to rest.

Anything else?

Yup. Leo also can invest in the stores, increasing the power of the weapons that are available for the adventurers. He also can send adventurers out to get materials to increase the power of the weapons in the shops.

There are also Inns, where traveling merchants can come, Taverns to create parties, and more.

How much does it costs?
1500 Wii Points ($15)

What about the downloadable content?
You have to pay for it (boo!). But, the race pack, where you unlock the Yukes, Selkies, and Lilties might be worth it for pure aesthetic purposes, even though it costs 800 Wii Points.

It's pretty bare bones for the first chapter (I just started Chapter IV). You recruit 5 adventurers, all warrior class, and then you build a couple of houses, a bakery, a weapons shop, and that's about it.

After the second chapter starts, you can start to change the classes for your adventurers. It gets more interesting. You then can build schools of magic, defense shops, item shops, a training station, and you can give money to different attributes of each. Like, say you want to make sure your adventurers have better swords. You give money to researching swords. You also might have to send your adventurers out into the wild to get materials so they can research better swords. There's also a Tavern, where you can make your adventurers go into parties to be stronger.

You get money by building more houses so you can tax your residents. People are happier when they're around a bakery, but this all takes elementithe. The cycle continues.

I know the way I explained it seems like it's not very fun, and it really shouldn't be, but honestly, it's completely worth it. I just don't know why it's as fun as it is.

I've played it for maybe 5 hours or so, and I can't put it down. Seriously, it's really addicting. I realize the price is a little steep, but I think we've all payed much more for worse games. Seriously, get this.

E3 2004: Yu-Gi-Oh DS Impressions

May 14, 2004 - There's a bazillion Yu-Gi-Oh games on the Game Boy Advance, and Konami's wasting no time getting the first Yu-Gi-Oh game for the Nintendo DS.

The company had Yu-Gi-Oh: Nightmare Troubadour on display in Nintendo's DS demo area, and the game is essentially another Yu-Gi-Oh card game on a console. It definitely fits the platform, especially with the system's touch screen control since it's easy to slot cards up on the playfield by dragging them from your hand into battle. The secondary screen handles all the 3D graphics and displays the game from the perspective of the player, and when the two opponents battle the game pulls up polygonal versions of the creatures in the Yu-Gi-Oh universe to represent the attack.

The wireless capabilities will also come in handy for one-on-one battles and trades, but that wasn't a feature on display in the Nintendo booth.

Dragon Quest V hits a million in Japan

The start made by Dragon Quest V: Hand of a Heavenly Bride in Japan is hardly going to deter Square Enix from releasing more remakes (which we're completely fine with, by the way). Famitsu is reporting that the title has already burst through the million units sold mark, a meager thirteen days after it first appeared on Japanese store shelves. You won't be surprised to hear that it's currently creaming everything else in the charts over there.

If a remake of a sixteen-year-old Dragon Quest SNES game can hit seven figures inside its opening fortnight, then perhaps Dragon Quest IX really can reach Yoichi Wada's lofty expectations ... and then some.

New Asteroid Has Long Odds For Earth Crash

A newly found asteroid, large enough to wreak worldwide destruction, will cross Earth's path in 2019, and although the chance of a collision is slim, astronomers cannot yet rule it out.

If the asteroid, named 2002 NT7, were to hit, it would be on Feb. 1, 2019. The odds of that happening are less than 1 in 200,000, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory said yesterday. That is roughly the same chance that an unknown, as yet unseen meteor will hit Earth between now and then. Scientists expect the 1-in-200,000 odds to grow longer as they learn more about the asteroid's orbit.

On the 0-to-10 Torino scale describing asteroid hazards, 2002 NT7 ranks a 1, meriting careful monitoring but with the chance of impact judged extremely unlikely. A ranking of 0 means no danger; a 10 means certain impact with worldwide devastation.

In earlier asteroid scares, astronomers quickly ruled out any chance of impact, or the potential impact remains so far in the future that it is impossible to judge the risk.

Astronomers first spotted 2002 NT7 on July 9. With two weeks of observations, they have mapped out its orbit fairly precisely -- it circles around the Sun once every 837 days at a steep tilt of 42 degrees compared to the orbits of the planets.

But astronomers have not yet pinned down the asteroid's location, which means their predictions of where it will be on Feb. 1, 2019, may be off by tens of millions of miles.

''It's the old train on the track problem,'' Dr. Donald K. Yeomans of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory said. ''You don't know when the train is going to arrive at the crossing point.''

If NT7, which is one-and-one-quarter miles wide, does strike Earth at 60,000 miles an hour, the impact could gouge a crater many miles wide, destroying large swaths of the surrounding area.

On average, an asteroid of NT7's size hits Earth every few million years. The meteor that killed off the dinosaurs 65 million years ago was 6 to 9 miles wide.

After 2019, NT7 will have several more close passes by Earth, including 2044, 2053, 2060 and 2078. Dr. Yeomans said that with a few more weeks of observations, astronomers will probably be able to rule out any chance of impact for all of them.

U.S. Thwarts Russian Comeback, Will Play for Gold

BEIJING (AP) -- The U.S. men's volleyball team will play for the Olympic gold medal after defeating Russia in five sets on Friday.

With the 25-22, 25-21, 25-27, 22-25, 15-13 victory, the U.S. men remain undefeated in Beijing.

They play the winner of the late semifinal between Brazil and Italy in the title match on Sunday. Russia plays the loser in the bronze medal match.

The U.S. won Olympic gold medals in 1984 and 1988, before winning the bronze in 1992. But the closest they've gotten since then was a fourth-place finish at the 2004 Athens games.

It is the first time since 1984 in Los Angeles that both the U.S. men and women have advanced to the gold medal match. The women play Brazil on Saturday for the title.

Russia was the bronze medalist in Athens and the silver medalist in 2000. The team won gold medals in 1964, 1968 and 1980. In Beijing, the Russians went 4-1 in preliminary pool play, with a loss to Poland, before defeating Bulgaria 3-1 in the semifinals.

After winning all five matches in the preliminary round, the U.S. men beat Serbia in the quarterfinals 3-2 to advance.

On Friday, the two teams played a close first set, but the U.S. went up 17-16 on Stanley Clayton's ace, then added another point on Sergey Grankin's errant spike. The U.S. won it when Maxim Mikhaylov's spike went long.

Russia took a 16-13 lead in the second after Alexander Kosarev's block. But the United States had three straight points in the end to take the set. Reid Priddy scored with a pair of successful spikes, before Yury Berezkho's spike went into the net to give the U.S. the set.

Alexey Kuleshov's block put Russia ahead 17-13 in the third set for their biggest margin to that point. The Russians extended the lead to 20-15, but the United States rallied again to even it at 24 before Russia won it on Alexander Volkov's block.

That led to a tense fourth set. Russia was up 19-16 and went on to win it on Sergey Tetyukhin's spike -- putting the pro-Russian crowd on its feet.

Priddy's spike put the U.S. in front 6-3 in the deciding set, but the tenacious Russians kept pace and briefly went ahead until David Lee's block made it 13-12 for the U.S. team.

Lee scored the final four points for the U.S., including the match-winning spike. He pumped his fist as he was mobbed by his teammates.

The U.S. men have faced considerable adversity in their remarkable run to the gold medal match.

Before competition started, coach Hugh McCutcheon was called hastily away from practice. Later, the team learned that his father-in-law, Todd Bachman, had been fatally stabbed at a popular tourist site in Beijing. Bachman's wife, Barbara, was badly hurt.

McCutcheon is married to the Bachman's daughter, former Olympian Elisabeth "Wiz" Bachman McCutcheon, who played for the U.S. women in Athens.

The coach took leave from the team to be with his family. Assistant Ron Larsen was made interim head coach.

McCutcheon missed three matches before returning to the team when his mother-in-law was taken home by air ambulance.

The United States team has marked their shoes with the initials of Todd and Barbara Bachman during the competition.

POKEMON DIAMON/PEARL

Much to the delight of Pokémaniacs the world over, Nintendo and Game Freak have finally brought a proper Pokémon game to the Nintendo DS with Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, and it delivers much of what a fan would desire—a richer, more detailed presentation, the ability to battle and trade Pokémon over the Internet, and of course, more than 100 brand-new Pokémon to collect. Like any of the core Pokémon games released since the original Red and Blue hit in 1999, Diamond and Pearl offer some nice upgrades, but if you didn't like Pokémon then, you probably won't care for it now. That said, it's a little surprising how well the formula holds up in Diamond and Pearl, which is a testament to the strong fundamentals of the series as well as the quality of the execution.

The core Pokémon games have never looked better.

Sticking to the script, Diamond and Pearl start out the same as any other Pokémon game, and though the specifics are different, the story plays out in a familiar fashion. Playing as either a young boy or girl living in the out-of-the-way hamlet of Twinleaf Town in the Sinnoh region, you and your highly competitive best friend are sent into the world by Professor Rowan to collect as much data on the Pokémon that inhabit the region as is possible, which you do by capturing and fighting. During your travels, you will battle plenty of wild Pokémon and other Pokémon trainers like yourself, as well as face off with the leaders of eight different Pokémon gyms spread across Sinnoh. And, in the tradition of the nefarious Team Rocket, Diamond and Pearl introduce the shadowy and oddly self-righteous Team Galactic, a new Pokémon-obsessed organization for you to square off with. The plot doesn't tread much new ground for the series, and it generally keeps things real light and breezy. They won't dazzle you with the complexity or originality of their storytelling, but Diamond and Pearl are still packed with lots of sharp writing. There are hundreds of people for you to meet, and though they don't always offer lengthy conversations, they all have something to say.

The story is ultimately in the service of the gameplay, which fans and newcomers should be able to leap right into without much fuss. You start off with a single Pokémon companion by your side, which serves as your proxy in battle—you might be calling the shots in a fight, but it's your Pokémon that do all the heavy lifting. As you wander through forests, fields of tall grass, underground caves, and a myriad of other locations, you'll regularly be attacked by wild Pokémon, which, if you're able to wear down their health without defeating them entirely, can be captured in a Pokéball, effectively taming them and turning them into companions. You can have up to six Pokémon with you at once, and each of your Pokémon can learn up to four different abilities. These abilities can come naturally as they earn experience in battle, or you can teach them new tricks using technical machines and hidden machines, which can be earned in a number of different ways. As they grow stronger, many Pokémon can also evolve, effectively turning them into an entirely new and more powerful Pokémon.

The combat is turn based, and it's mostly about the rock-paper-scissors nature of the different types of Pokémon. The only difference between Diamond and Pearl is the Pokémon contained within each game. With the addition of 107 brand-new Pokémon, Diamond and Pearl raise the grand total of Pokémon to capture to well over 480. Every single one of them can be categorized by type. Some of these types are defined by elements, such as water-type Pokémon and fire-type Pokémon, while others are determined by more specific, functional differences, such as fight-type Pokémon and poison-type Pokémon. Each type of Pokémon is inherently weak to the attacks of another, so the key to combat is having a well-balanced team of Pokémon with you that will be able to handle whatever types of Pokémon get thrown at you. It's a simple enough concept to grasp, but there are enough different types of Pokémon out there that you'll find yourself constantly tweaking your roster of active Pokémon and laboring over which abilities you should be giving to which of your Pokémon. The fact that you're constantly running in to, and thus capturing, new Pokémon makes the process that much more involved. And that's just the basics. Aside from wandering around the Sinnoh region and getting into countless Pokémon battles, you'll fish, harvest and plant berries, cook up special treats for your Pokémon, enter your Pokémon in a pageant, set up a secret hideout, and more. These games are long, with the main stories clocking in at well over 40 hours, and those intent on hunting down the rarer Pokémon will spend far more than that.

The bulk of the activities in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl aren't new to the series, so what separates these two from the Pokémon games that appeared on the Game Boy Advance? For starters, the presentation has been improved to take advantage of the superior DS hardware. Though the game is mostly still presented in 2D, there's improved detail to the 2D and you'll notice lots of nice polygonal touches. For example, buildings and windmills are rendered in 3D, and it's enough to give the 2D world a little depth. The game also has a bright, highly saturated color palette that makes it a pleasure to look at. When in battle, the Pokémon are still static 2D sprites—much of which appears to have been recycled from the Pokémon games on the GBA—but in general, the 2D art still looks sharp. The dynamic battle transitions look great, as do the numerous attack effects. Diamond and Pearl also feature some catchy music, and there's a whole lot of it, with a special theme for virtually every location or activity. As clean and upbeat as the music is, though, some of the sound effects from the Pokémon themselves sound screechy and lo-fi. It's out of place, considering how great the rest of the game looks and sounds.

There's also a little touch-screen support in Diamond and Pearl, letting you use the stylus to select menus during battle and play a few simple, rather forgettable minigames that crop up. During most of your travels, the lower screen on the DS is occupied by your Pokémon watch (Pokétch for short). In addition to telling the time, you can install a number of applications, some more useful than others, on your Pokétch. There's a calculator, a pedometer, a status screen for your Pokémon, a metal detector of sorts, and more.

Online play means it's that much easier to find others to battle and trade with.

What's probably the most significant new feature in Diamond and Pearl is online play, which lets you battle, trade, and chat with other players over the Internet. The trading system is surprisingly robust, letting you put any of your Pokémon up for trade on a global market, while specifying which Pokémon you'll trade it for. Once you define the terms of the trade, the Pokémon is transferred to a server, and you can set it and forget it. Your DS doesn't even need to be turned on for someone to agree to your terms and complete the transaction. The online battle options aren't as immediately accessible. Early on, you'll need the game-specific friend code for anyone that you want to battle online, and it will take dozens of hours of single-player action before you'll be able to battle with random strangers. The game also supports voice chat using the newly released DS headset, but you can only use it with other players whose friend codes you've already registered. Of course, you can also still battle and trade with other people through a local Wi-Fi connection. Diamond and Pearl also promise connectivity to the upcoming Pokémon Battle Revolution for the Nintendo Wii, purportedly letting you use your DS as a controller and take the Pokémon you've collected on the DS into battle on your TV.

Between the 100-plus new Pokémon, the improved presentation, and the online play, this is a must-have game for established fans. The new features also make this the most well-rounded Pokémon game to date, and if you've never dabbled in the world of Pokémon before, there's no better game to start with.

China's He Kexin won a tiebreaker over all-around champion Nastia Liukin on Monday.

The Beijing Games all-around champion from the United States received the same 16.725 score as China's He Kexin on uneven bars Monday. A tiebreaker was used because dual medals are no longer awarded in gymnastics.

And that tiebreaker was so complex that long after the medals were handed out, International Gymnastics Federation officials still were explaining it.

Suffice it to say that because of the deductions from a perfect 10 for each gymnast in their execution scores, He had gold and Liukin had her second silver and fourth overall medal of these games.

"For me, it's not correct," said FIG president Bruno Grandi, who noted the rules for dual medals were dropped in 1997 at the direction of the IOC. "When two people arrive on the same level, they are champions. But this competition doesn't belong to us. It is the IOC's.

"I believe it's correct to have two gold medals, but this is my modest opinion. The IOC is different."

Liukin would not criticize the scoring system.

"It's nothing I can control, and honestly, I can say it has been very fair to me, and I got the biggest gold medal of them all," said Liukin, winner of the gold in women's all-around gymnastics.

She doesn't have the latest one, but her four medals tie her father Valeri's haul when he competed for the Soviet Union. Coincidentally, one of Valeri Liukin's golds, on high bar in 1988, came in a tie with teammate Vladimir Artemov.

"I tied in my Olympics," he said with a shrug. "There were people that tied in the all-around back when I was competing. I guess they don't want that now."

He Kexin, at the center of an age eligibility controversy -- is she really the minimum of 16? -- admitted to being surprised by the outcome.

"I didn't expect to win a gold medal because the more I want it, the more pressure I feel," she said. "It's more nerve-racking than competing with the whole team."

Particularly when it comes down to such a minuscule margin.

Liukin's silver gave the United States six overall medals. China has five, including team gold.

Oddly, there also was a deadlock for the men's vault gold, which went to Poland's Leszek Blanik over France's Thomas Bouhail.

Blanik's 16.6 on the first vault was the highest of the four total attempts by the two gymnasts, giving him the gold. Bronze went to Anton Golotsutskov of Russia.

Silver and bronze on pommel horse Sunday also were decided by a tiebreaker.

Chen Yibing extended China's perfect run of gold by winning the still rings competition. That string ended only because no Chinese men qualified for vault.

A hurricane couldn't have swayed Chen, the two-time world champion, during his routine. He was perfectly still on nearly every move in registering a 16.600 that blew away the field of eight.

"I was nervous, but I was prepared mentally and I believed I had the ability to win," Chen said.

Chen hammed it up big time. He lingered on the podium after his performance to soak in the cheers, and exulted with both arms high in the air when his name was announced at the medals ceremony. After an arm bump with silver medalist Yang Wei, Chen looked like he was smelling his medal before he kissed it and held it up to the crowd. He sang every word of China's national anthem, his eyes tearing toward the end.

His exit was just as grand as his rings routines: Chen draped a China flag on his shoulders before waving it to the enamored crowd.

"This is the highest individual honor for me," he said, "and I waited a long time."

All-around champion Yang Wei wasn't nearly as impressive as in his previous rings routines, but his strength and steadiness earned him silver. Oleksandr Vorobiov of Ukraine took bronze.

Five-time Olympian Jordan Jovtchev went first -- and soon was gone. After he missed a handstand, the five-time Olympian knew he wasn't getting a fifth Olympic medal. Jovtchev left the arena moments later.

Mega Man games are known for being challenging and Mega Man ZX is definitely up there with the toughest games in the series. In fact, it's one of the most challenging games I've played on the Nintendo DS to date. This side-scrolling action game offers challenging enemies, boss battles that test your patience and isn't exactly liberal with the save points. Fortunately Mega Man ZX is also addictive and very enjoyable. In fact it's one of the best side-scrolling action games you can currently purchase on the DS.

Mega Man ZX allows you to either play as a boy called Vent or a girl named Aile. The game plays virtually identical no matter which one you choose to play as although, if you play through as both, you'll notice that Vent and Aile have very different attitudes and different dialogue. Both Aile and Vent work for the delivery company Giro Express. The game begins with a delivery that goes horribly wrong as Vent and his boss, Girouette are attacked by Maverick forces. They were due to deliver a package to the Guardians (who defend the peripheral towns against the Maverick forces) but when Vent falls from a cliff, thus escaping the clutches of one set of Maverick forces, he finds the Guardians also under attack from the same enemy. The package, a Biometal named Model X merges with Vent (or Aile depending on who you pick to play as) and gives him a blaster and incredible, short bust, speed.

During the course of the game you'll acquire five different Biometal Models (Model X, Model HX, Model FX, Model LX and Model PX) and each will give Vent (or Aile) special abilities. Model HX allows Vent/Aile to use Double Sabres, offers Air Dash and Hover capabilities and has electricity as its elemental attribute. Model FX allows Vent/Aile to use the Knuckle Buster weapon, offers superior attack power and has flame as its elemental attribute. Model LX offers the Halberd weapon, excels in marine combat with Swimming and Water Dash Abilities and has ice as its elemental attribute. Finally Model PX offers Throwing Blades and Throwing Stars and gives the ability to use stealth techniques. You can switch between Model forms at any time, although in any given situation it will usually be beneficial to pick one Model above the others.

Recently, the FDA overwhelmingly refused to take Avandia, the diabetes drug, off the market, despite studies that showed increased heart attack as a very realistic side effect. In early 2007, Avandia was the second highest grossing diabetes drug in the United States. An analysis of 42 studies showed that there is a 43 percent higher chance of heart attack risk with diabetic patients taking Avandia than those taking any other or no diabetes medication. This year, some consumers who visited the Pars Cove booth contracted food poisoning due to salmonella. Thus far, the problem food has been identified as an herb tomato cucumber salad that was served with their hummus. Another recent salmonella outbreak was traced to the makers of Veggie Booty, a snack that was recalled and is produced by a Sea Cliff company. The FDA recalled the product June 28 after it received over 50 cases of salmonella poisoning in 17 states from consumers who had eaten Veggie Booty. The salmonella may have been a result of additional seasoning added to the product after it had been cooked. Numerous lawsuits have since been filed against the makers of Veggie Booty. Earth is in such a turmoil due to the Reploid uprisings that humans have decided to colonize space instead. (Like that’s going to solve their problems.) They’ve completed a project called “Jakob” which includes an elevator to the moon (why is it people think that building rail lines into outer space to connect the moon with the earth is a feasible operation?).

Things go awry when Vile shows up and kidnaps Lumine, the Reploid director of the project. Sigma is therefore suspected of being behind the capture of the Jakob project. “Suspected” being the key word, since all next-generation Reploids are now equipped with Axl’s DNA Copy ability, and yes, as X discovers very quickly, some of them even went so far as to copy Sigma...

Stupid Questions

Why does anyone think it’s smart to mass-produce Reploids with copy chips? Forget the Maverick issue; a copy-chip would allow a Reploid to circumvent with ease any sort of security. He could make himself look like an employee and steal stuff from a store. He could mimic a government official and stroll right into top-secret areas. He could turn himself into a manager and clean out a bank. I can’t fathom how mass identity theft could possibly help any society. It’s no wonder the X series world is in such a mess...

At first glance this game is basically a traditional side-scrolling variation of Mega Man X7, without the free-range modes and the lock-on targeting cursor. This I would consider a good thing; but it’s not quite the same, though: the character models are completely different here, the duck is gone, and of course they tweaked a few other things here and there.

The game play is much closer here to the classic 2-D games than was the previous title, but it does bear some features from Mega Man X7. The tag-team is here, though you are still limited to bringing only two of the three characters with you to each stage. But now Axl plays like Bass in Mega Man & Bass (except that he hovers instead of double-jumps; Zero’s still the one with the double-jump). Note that Axl gets completely different weapons than X this time around, and he doesn’t need weapon energy for any of them. (He uses weapon energy only on his transformations.)

Characters: Your three characters are a bit more distinctive in this game than the previous one. X’s advantages are, as before, his suits of armor and the fact that he can charge his buster and his weapons. Overall, he still ranks the best at taking damage and dishing it out. Zero remains as the melee fighter with attacks that cover a lot of area at close range. He doesn’t rely much on weapon energy and is more fragile than X. Finally, Axl is now the rapid-fire character who can aim in multiple directions and whose main benefit, besides his DNA Copy ability, is the fact that none of his Master Weapons require weapon energy. Axl is also probably the best character for midair acrobatics. Not only can he hover on a double-jump, but he also floats for a good span of time if you shoot while in the air, plus he can hang onto a wall for nearly forever without sliding down it as long as he is firing.

Booming China Suddenly Worries That a Slowdown Is Taking Hold

HONG KONG — Many Chinese have been expecting a post-Olympics economic slowdown, but it has already started and the Games have not even begun.

Chinese factories reported a plunge in new orders last month. Exports are barely growing. The real estate market is weakening, with apartment prices sinking in southeastern China, the region hardest hit by economic troubles.

The trends, which actually have little to do with the Olympics (the Games themselves, which open Friday, are small compared with the size of the economy), are being felt worldwide.

China’s slowing growth is one reason that gasoline prices have fallen in the United States, for example. Similarly, world prices for metals like copper, tin, zinc and aluminum have tumbled in the last several weeks, as voracious Chinese factories have closed, or cut back their consumption.

But while China’s difficulties may reduce inflationary pressures around the world, they threaten to slow further the already tenuous global economic growth.

“China has slowed down a lot already, but it’s going to slow down more,” said Hong Liang, the senior China economist at Goldman Sachs.

Economists expect growth to slip from its recent pace of 11 percent or more annually to as low as 9 or 9.5 percent over the coming year.

Most nations would envy that rate. But 9 percent growth will make it much harder to supply jobs to the millions of Chinese moving to cities from rural areas in search of work. And any slower growth could prove a shock to workers who have been receiving double-digit pay increases each year, as companies struggle to find enough labor to keep factories open.

How Chinese authorities manage a slower economy, and its effect on China’s 1.3 billion people, will be a test for the regime. It seems to be responding quickly.

A Politburo meeting on July 25 replaced the previous national economic goals, preventing overheating of the economy and controlling inflation, with new targets. As enunciated by President Hu Jintao in recent appearances, the objectives now are to seek fast and sustained economic growth while still keeping inflation under control.

“We must maintain steady, relatively fast development and control excessive price rises as the priority tasks of macro adjustment,” he said on Friday at a rare news conference.

Having put a series of brakes on the economy over the last five years to keep inflation under control, Chinese policy makers are now removing some to prevent growth from slowing too much.

For example, after letting China’s currency rise sharply against the dollar in the first half of this year, China’s central bank has actually pushed it down against the dollar in each of the last four trading days, including a decline of 0.13 percent on Monday. This is helping to preserve the competitiveness of Chinese exporters in foreign markets, although at the risk of angering the United States and other trading partners.

In the last several days, Chinese authorities have also raised export tax refunds for garment manufacturers — an industry previously slighted by regulators, who remain more interested in promoting higher-tech industries.

Policy makers have also reportedly moved to ease lending limits on banks.

Weak demand from the United States over the last year, and now from Europe as well, is part of China’s emerging problem. On Sunday evening, the port here was less full of containers than usual, part of a broader slowing of export growth.

This weakening of exports has been particularly true of light manufactured goods from southeastern China, one of the country’s two main export areas, along with the Yangtze River delta region around Shanghai.

At Union Bags, a luggage maker in Dongguan, about 40 miles up the Pearl River from Hong Kong, sales to the United States have dropped 20 percent in the last year.

“We have had to cut back on our own orders to our local suppliers of zippers, nylon and polyester,” said Jim Jiang, the company’s sales manager.

Demand is beginning to weaken for big-ticket purchases. J. D. Power and Associates just cut its forecast for car sales in China this year to 5.95 million — still up from 5.42 million last year, but much less of an increase than the company’s previous forecast of 6.2 million.

More serious for the broader Chinese economy are signs that the real estate market is weakening after years of climbing prices that had prompted warnings of a possible bubble. Here again, the biggest trouble seems to be in southern China.

11 Charged in Theft of 40 Million Card Numbers

BOSTON — The Justice Department said on Tuesday that it had charged 11 people in the theft of tens of millions of credit and debit card numbers of customers shopping at major retailers, including TJX Companies, in one of the largest reported identity-theft incidents on record.

The United States Attorney in Boston said those charged were involved in the theft of more than 40 million credit and debit card numbers.

TJX, of Framingham, Mass., which owns the Marshall’s and TJ Maxx chains, was the hardest hit by the ring, acknowledging in March 2007 that information from 45.7 million credit cards was stolen from its computers.

The charges focus on three people from the United States, three from the Ukraine, two from China, one from Estonia and one from Belarus.

The authorities said that the scheme was spearheaded by a Miami man named Albert Gonzalez, who hacked into the computer systems of retailers including TJX, BJ’s Wholesale Club, OfficeMax, Boston Market, Barnes & Noble, Sports Authority, Forever 21 and DSW Inc. The numbers were then stored on computer servers in the United States and Eastern Europe.

They then sold the information to people in the United States and Europe, who used it to withdraw tens of thousands of dollars at a time from automated teller machines, the authorities said.

“This case clearly shows how strokes on a keyboard with a criminal purpose can have costly results,” Michael Sullivan, the United States attorney in Boston, said in a statement. “Consumers, companies and governments from around the world must further develop ways to protect our sensitive personal and business information.”

Mr. Gonzalez, who is being held by New York authorities on another hacking-related charge, was charged with computer fraud, wire fraud, access-device fraud, aggravated identity theft and conspiracy, the authorities said.

TJX has agreed to pay more than $60 million to credit-card networks Visa and MasterCard to settle complaints related to the incident, which is one of the largest on record based on the number of accounts involved.

G.O.P. Drops in Voting Rolls in Many States

Well before Senators Barack Obama and John McCain rose to the top of their parties, a partisan shift was under way at the local and state level.

For more than three years starting in 2005, there has been a reduction in the number of voters who register with the Republican Party and a rise among those who affiliate with Democrats and, almost as often, with no party at all.

While the implications of the changing landscape for Mr. Obama and Mr. McCain are far from clear, voting experts say the registration numbers may signal the beginning of a move away from Republicans that could affect local, state and national politics over several election cycles. Already, there has been a sharp reversal for Republicans in many legislatures and governors’ mansions.

In several states, including the traditional battlegrounds of Nevada and Iowa, Democrats have surprised their own party officials with significant gains in registration. In both of those states, there are now more registered Democrats than Republicans, a flip from 2004. No states have switched to the Republicans over the same period, according to data from 26 of the 29 states in which voters register by party. (Three of the states did not have complete data.)

In six states, including Iowa, New Hampshire and Pennsylvania, the Democratic piece of the registration pie grew more than three percentage points, while the Republican share declined. In only three states — Kentucky, Louisiana and Oklahoma — did Republican registration rise while Democratic registration fell, but the Republican increase was less than a percentage point in Kentucky and Oklahoma. Louisiana was the only state to register a gain of more than one percentage point for Republicans as Democratic numbers declined.

Over the same period, the share of the electorate that registers as independent has grown at a greater rate than Republicans or Democrats in 12 states. The rise has been so significant that in states like Arizona, Colorado and North Carolina, nonpartisan voters essentially constitute a third party.

Swings in party registration are not uncommon from one year to the next, or even over two years. Registration, moreover, often has no impact on how people actually vote, and people sometimes switch registration to vote in a primary, then flip again come Election Day.

But for a shift away from one party to sustain itself — the current registration trend is now in its fourth year — is remarkable, researchers who study voting patterns say. And though comparable data are not available for the 21 states where voters do not register by party, there is evidence that an increasing number of voters in those states are also moving away from the Republican Party based on the results of recent state and Congressional elections, the researchers said.

“This is very suggestive that there is a fundamental change going on in the electorate,” said Michael P. McDonald, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution and an associate professor of political science at George Mason University who has studied voting patterns.

Mr. McDonald added that, more typically, voting and registration patterns tended to even out or revert to the opposing party between elections.

Dick Armey, the former House majority leader and one of the designers of the so-called Republican Revolution of 1994, said: “Obviously, these are not good numbers for the party to be looking at. Democrats have always had extremely broad multifaceted registration programs.”

But in terms of the presidential election, Mr. Armey said the tea leaves were harder to read.

“I think the key in this one is, where do all these new independent voters break?” he said. “I think right now, you’ve got a guy in western Pennsylvania saying, ‘I am really disgusted right now and I’m not going to register as a Republican anymore, but I really don’t want this guy Obama elected.’ ”

Those in charge of state Democratic parties cite a national displeasure with the Bush administration as an impetus for the changing numbers, which run counter to a goal of Karl Rove, President Bush’s former top adviser, to create a permanent realignment in favor of Republicans.

Google Launches Virtual World Called Lively

Well, this sucks for Second Life. Google is launching a new service today called Lively, a browser based virtual world add-on that lets users create and customize avatars and worlds, interact with other users, and generally have a richer social interaction than is offered by GTalk today.

Worlds can be embedded into web pages, although only Windows users on IE or Firefox can view them, after an add-on download and installation. Mac and Linux users will have to wait for now.

Google has created a number of sample rooms that can be copied and altered, or users can start from scratch and build their own world. Furniture and other items can be added and moved around. Avatars can talk to each other, do things like dance and shake hands, and manipulate objects (in a demo, my avatar was able to blow up drums of toxic waste by double clicking on them. Users can also, of course, chat with each other - GTalk is the underlying chat engine.

This isn’t yet a full Second Life competitor. There’s no single world, for example, where users can move around. But it’s easy to see Google evolving this into a single online world. And then, of course, selling advertising into it. More screen shots:

In a time of both sophisticated technology and powerful magic, an evil sorceress corrupts the world's largest military power through manipulation and deception, enslaving mankind to do her bidding. Her goal is not something as simple as world domination; but to completely conquer all of space and time.

To counter the turn of events, various leaders head combat training schools, known as Gardens, that turn out elite fighting forces. Known as SeeDs, they defend, serve, and protect humankind from the sorceress. The sole purpose of these academies is to vanquish the sorceress and save humanity as we know it, although they take many other assignments for the right price.

A small, loose-knit group of SeeD graduates find themselves wrapped in a much bigger endeavor than simple military combat. Now, a gunblade specialist, together with a diverse group of young heroes, must set aside his fears, face the emotions he's run from, and become the leader that he never wanted to be.
